UK's National Strategy for AM (afternoon session) Ken Young - The Manufacturing Technology Centre

Biography

Prof Young did both his BSc in Mechanical Engineering and his PhD in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Nottingham, before spending 6 year in industry writing CAD based programming systems for industrial system including robots, machine tools and CMMs.  He then spent 20 years at Warwick Manufacturing Group during which time he led their IMRC and the Manufacturing Technologies research group.  
His current role is as Technology Director for the Manufacturing Technology Centre.  Here he oversees research in fields as diverse as additive manufacturing, electronics, informatics, simulation, friction welding, advanced fixturing and intelligent automation.  The MTC specialises in maturing manufacturing processes from laboratory proof of concept through to being proven at low volume.
Since he joined the MTC in 2011 it has grown from 2 people to over 500 and has become a £40m turnover business.  It has already delivered complete world leading production facilities into UK factories.
Ken is currently Co-chair of the Industrial Leadership Group for Additive Manufacturing.  This group is responsible for the UK Additive Manufacturing Strategy  and are currently working on a bid for £225M to the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund in order to drive the development of the additive manufacturing industry in the UK.
